Interior Photography Case Study: Kitchen Extension in Galway

Client: Dubh House Studio | Location: Galway

Project Overview

This interior photography case study showcases a beautifully designed kitchen extension in Galway, created by interior designers Claire and Orla of Dubh House Studio. The goal of the project was to professionally document the space for use across their website, social media channels, and award submissions — with tight deadlines and high expectations.

The finished images played a key role in increasing online engagement, visibility, and generating new client enquiries.

The Space

From the moment I entered the property, it was clear this was a carefully considered interior. The extension flows effortlessly from the existing house and culminates in a striking visual connection to the garden beyond. An award-winning artwork positioned at the end of the space acts as a focal point, drawing the eye through the kitchen and reinforcing the sense of depth and balance.

Prior to the shoot, the Dubh House Studio team worked closely with the homeowners to prepare the space. Personal items were removed to ensure the design could be photographed cleanly and consistently — a crucial step in achieving timeless, publication-ready interior imagery.

Kitchen Design Highlights

The kitchen is a calm, contemporary space that balances warm timber cabinetry with soft neutral tones and refined detailing. A large central island anchors the room, topped with a crisp white work surface and paired with elegant stool seating, making it both functional and inviting.

Pendant lights suspended above the island add warmth and visual interest, while subtle integrated lighting at floor level enhances depth and highlights the craftsmanship throughout the space. Full-height cabinetry and integrated appliances maintain a seamless, uncluttered aesthetic, allowing materials, proportions, and light to take centre stage.

Large glazing floods the kitchen with natural light and strengthens the connection between the interior and the garden, creating an airy, welcoming atmosphere ideal for modern living.

My Approach to Interior Photography

For this project, I followed my usual structured and methodical approach to interior photography. I began by capturing wider compositions to establish the layout, flow, and scale of the space. Once fully familiar with the environment, I moved in closer to focus on key design features, materials, textures, and finishes.

This approach ensures:

  • A complete visual record of the project

  • A strong mix of wide shots and detailed images

  • Versatile content suitable for websites, portfolios, social media, and press

The Brief & Timing

The primary brief was to create a strong set of images for Dubh House Studio's website and social media. However, timing made the project even more important.

Shortly before the shoot, the studio had been shortlisted as finalists in the Fit Out Awards, in two categories, with the awards taking place just one week later. This meant the images needed to be delivered quickly — and they needed to stand out.

Results & Impact

The photography delivered immediate and measurable results:

  • A behind-the-scenes reel generated 15,000+ views

  • Image carousels reached 6,000+ views with strong engagement

  • Collaborative posts significantly increased visibility

Most importantly, the content drove real business outcomes. Both Fitzpatrick Creative and Dubh House Studio received a surge in enquiries following the posts, with several converting into new clients.

All of this was achieved from a two-hour interior photography shoot.

Why Case Study Photography Matters

This project highlights the value of professionally documenting interior design work. High-quality interior photography:

  • Builds credibility and trust

  • Elevates your brand online

  • Fuels social media and award submissions

  • Converts visibility into real enquiries

When paired with a clear content strategy, professional photography becomes a powerful marketing tool for interior designers and architects.
